Is it a verruca?

A verruca is a wart on the sole of your foot or on your toes. Signs to look out for:

  • A small, rough, hard patch of skin, often on the ball of the foot, the heel or under the toes
  • Tiny black dots in the middle (these are small blood vessels)
  • It hurts when you squeeze it from the sides, more than when you press straight down
  • The lines of your skin go around it instead of through it
  • A cluster of small verrucas joined together (a mosaic verruca)
  • It's spreading, or someone else in the house has picked one up

If it's sore, spreading, or you've been trying to get rid of it for months, it's time to get it looked at.

What causes verrucas?

Verrucas are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus gets in through tiny cuts or soft, damp skin. Swimming pools, changing rooms and shared showers are where most people pick one up.

They're most common in children and teenagers, but adults get them too. Some verrucas clear on their own. Others last for years, because the virus sits in the top layer of skin where your immune system doesn't easily notice it. That's also why over-the-counter freezing kits and plasters often don't work: they don't get deep enough.

The Foot Focus method for verrucas

Every verruca is different, so we don't use the same treatment for everyone. We look at how long you've had it, how big it is, how many there are, your age and what you've already tried. Then we pick the treatment most likely to work for you.

  1. Step 1: Diagnose it properly

We confirm it's a verruca and not a corn or something else. They can look alike but need completely different treatment.

  2. Step 2: Choose the right treatment

    • Cryotherapy

We freeze the verruca so the tissue breaks down and your body clears it. Quick, and it's often where we start.

    • Remy Class IV laser

Targets the verruca with laser energy. No cutting, no needles.

    • Verrutop

A Nitric Acid solution we apply to the verruca in clinic. Gentle and painless, which makes it our first choice for children.

    • Falknor's needling

For stubborn verrucas that haven't responded to other treatments. We numb the area with local anaesthetic, then perforate the verruca. This breaks it down and prompts your immune system to fight it.

  3. Step 3: Review and adjust

We check progress at each visit. If it isn't responding, we change approach rather than repeating something that isn't working.

  4. Step 4: Stop it coming back

We give you practical advice on preventing new verrucas and stopping them spreading to the rest of the family.

Frequently asked questions

How much does verruca removal cost?

Verruca treatment at Foot Focus starts from €90 per session. The total depends on the treatment and how many sessions you need. We'll tell you the cost before we start. If your health insurance covers podiatry, you can usually claim it back.

Does freezing a verruca hurt?

You'll feel a sharp, cold sting for a few seconds while we freeze it. The area can be tender for a day or two afterwards, and a small blister sometimes forms. Most people walk out and carry on as normal.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the size of the verruca, how long you've had it and the treatment used. Most patients need 2 to 5 sessions. We'll give you an honest estimate at your first appointment.

Do you offer laser verruca removal?

Yes. We use the Remy Class IV laser for verrucas at both our Finglas and Mount Merrion clinics.

Do you offer Swift verruca treatment?

No, we don't offer Swift, we found patients to struggle to tolerate the pain. We treat verrucas with cryotherapy, the Remy Class IV laser, Verrutop and Falknor's needling. We'll recommend the option that suits your verruca best.

What if my verruca won't go away?

For verrucas that haven't responded to other treatments, we offer Falknor's needling. It's done under local anaesthetic, so you won't feel the procedure itself. We provide you with follow up care to make sure it heals up.

Can you treat verrucas in children?

Yes. We treat children regularly, and Verrutop is painless, which makes it ideal for younger kids.

Should I just leave my verruca alone?

Some verrucas clear by themselves, but it can take months or even years. If it's painful, spreading, or putting you off swimming or sport, it's worth treating.

Can I go swimming with a verruca?

Yes. Wear a verruca sock or cover it with a waterproof plaster to avoid passing it on.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly with us online or by phone.
